In the extreme corners the 17-40 is sharper. 17-40 has noticeably less vignetting. 45mm f/6.3 vs 40mm f/4: When both wide open, the sharpness on the 15-45 is better. But stopping down the 17-40 to f/5.6 results in just as sharp images as the 15-45 wide open at 45mm f/6.3.
